About Bukit Merah
Bukit Merah literally means "red hill" in Malay that was referring to the reddish lateritic soils in the area. Previously, the hill was a much larger hill that was situated at the present site of Henderson housing estate. The hill was trimmed to its current state in 1973 with the surrounding kampong being demolished to make way for housing developments. Today, with its proximity to one of the busiest ports in the world - Port of Singapore as well to the CBD, housings in Bukit Merah is one of the most sought-after addresses in Singapore. There are about 51,000 flats and 147,000 HDB residents within the 17 subzones in the area. Tiong Bahru estate, which is within Bukit Merah, has sprung up as a popular hangout with attractive bistros and cafes in the vicinity.
